Ben Timberlake

"Ben Timberlake delivered an excellent keynote address that mixed darkly funny personal stories with deeply researched neuroscience to illustrate how the brain works at critical moments of risk. He instilled confidence in our audience and left them with practical knowledge that they have easily incorporated into their professional and personal lives."

Jerry Haworth, 36South, organiser of UBS Volatility Conference

Ben Timberlake is a former security consultant and medic, now archaeologist, journalist and author, specialising in high-risk areas including Iraq and Syria. In a previous life, his undercover missions concerned nuclear terrorism, the Far Right, and the trafficking of people, wildlife, looted antiquities and organs.

He has written for the Financial Times, The Guardian and The Economist, and made Channel 4 and Discovery films on topics from Japanese mummies to prehistoric rock art. His book, High Risk, published in 2021, is a vivid account of life on the edge. From his first brush with death and his time in the SAS, to his experiences in conflict zones and in extreme environments. The book has been praised for its insightful narrative, with the Times Magazine describing it as “Funny, chaotic but unexpectedly profound.”

Now focused on archaeology, Ben is co-founder of Jonah X, which works to preserve and protect art and cultural heritage in conflict zones. His gripping talks on decision-making in high-risk environments and post-traumatic growth draw from his extensive experiences, making him a sought-after speaker worldwide. Ben's unique blend of expertise in security, archaeology, and human psychology positions him as a compelling voice in discussions about resilience and the human condition under extreme circumstances.

Speaking topics

The psychology of risk

Why humans are biologically wired to seek danger. Ben draws on neuroscience to understand how the brain's reward system responds to risk, and how those lessons can be applied in the boardroom, the trading floor and everyday life.

Decision making under pressure

How individuals respond to high-stress situations, particularly when quick decisions are required. Based on his background in combat scenarios, Ben explores how stress affects cognitive processes and how to harness the ability of the brain to sharpen focus and avoid poor judgement.

Resilience and post-traumatic growth

Grounded in both psychological research and his own experiences, Ben explores how positive mental practices can ensure that trauma, whilst deeply painful, can also lead to positive changes such as increased resilience and stronger relationships both personally and professionally.

Healing trauma and uniting comminities

With unique insights into the world of archaeologists, conservationists, museum workers and artists, Ben explores how working together to save art and heritage can create common ground for dialogue and reconciliation, helping to repair fractured societies and preserve the ancient ideas and stories that are still essential for how we see the world today.
