Tom Tugendhat is a British politician and geopolitical expert specialising in international affairs. Before politics, he served as a lieutenant colonel in the British Army, deploying to Iraq and Afghanistan, and later worked as a military assistant to the Chief of the Defence Staff, advising the UK and US onMiddle Eastern policy. Since becoming an MP, he has been a leading voice in shaping UK foreign policy.
Tom's career has been defined by a strong focus on China’s geopolitical influence. As former Chair of the House of Commons Foreign Affairs Select Committee and co-founder of the China Research Group, he has closely scrutinised Beijing’s economic and strategic ambitions. His outspoken criticism of China’s policies led to sanctions from the Chinese government, underscoring his commitment to democratic values and international accountability.
Tom co-authored The New Technology State with Bill Raduchel, exploring how technology is reshaping global power dynamics—a subject central to his expertise on China's digital and economic influence. Fluent in French, Arabic, and Dari, he also speaks Russian and Pashto. He recently served in RishiSunak’s government as the Minister for Security.
